From Larry Peterson
There are lots of
anecdotal memories: Freshman year at St. Nick's was
unique. We sat in one place and the sisters moved from
room to room. Anyone with carpal tunnel syndrome can place
part of the blame on Sr. Henrietta and her teaching
techniques.. Lunch time on the Boardwalk was something
that couldn't be enjoyed today.
I always wanted HSHS to beat ACHS at something during my
four year term... and I remember Joe Clark sinking a shot
at the buzzer enabling HSHS JV basketball to beat ACHS for
the first time in history..that shot would be a 3 point
shot today.
Sr. Leo reminding me often that she taught my Dad, Aunt and Cousins...I
wasn't ever quite sure whether that was a status to which
I had to live up or down.
Others which can wait until the next reunion

DAVE CONRAD CONFESSES
!!!
(and implicates others!)
My memory is not as good as it used to be. Maybe some one can give me an answer to this question that has been in the back of my mind for years. In Sr. Ancilla's Biology class in 10th grade, we (Cornell & Fenwick, I think) put a dissected frog into one of our female classmates sandwich for her consumption during lunch. If you remember, we used to keep our lunches in those little cubicles on the rear wall of the Biology Classroom. If anyone can tell me the name of the poor unfortunate person, I would like to offer an
apology to her. Hoping that someone will come through with an answer.
From Pat McHale . . . .
DOES ANYONE REMEMBER riding in Larry Peterson's
truck after football games to Lily Lake..or was it
Birch Grove? That truck was jammed with whoever
wanted to go.... What'd we all do there anyhow?
CAN
LOIS
or any of the other cheerleaders
please tell us now
WHY WERE YOU KICKED OFF THE CHEERING SQUAD?
| I
think it was the Hammonton game...no, perhaps we'd
played Camden!!!!! ....and I along with all the
other cheerleaders was sitting on the bus on the
way home; we were ALL ecstatic cause we'd won. It
was a great trip back, but the bus got unbearably
hot (AND smelly -the football players were on
board ) and I took off my HSHS blue and gold
cheerleading sweater. Underneath the sweater I had
on a blouse (yeah, it was a bit see-throughable,
but not bad, and besides I was covering my
ungifted boobs with a bra). By the time we got
back to school I'd put my sweater back on, but
dear Mr. Inemer stopped me as I got off the
bus..."Miss Wimberg, what were you doing at
the back of the bus?" I replied, surprised by
his question, "Nothing"! "What
about your sweater?" "What ABOUT my
sweater?" "Don't talk back to me. You
took off your sweater on the bus, didn't
you?" |
"Yes, I took it
off because it was hot on the bus" (Notice I
said 'IT was hot' not 'I was hot'...by then others
were hanging around waiting for future
gossip...and I could just imagine the "Hot
for WHO!" repercussions). On the following
school day I was called into Sr. Mary Jane's
office, asked in the same manner the questions I
was asked by Mr. Inemer and when she heard my
answers, she looked at me as if I were a
"hussy" and said, "Well, Miss
Wimberg, you certainly don't deserve to be the
captain of the cheerleaders...you don't even
deserve to remain on the squad" and then, as
if that wasn't enough, dear Mary Jane added,
Imagine, YOU, the Spiritual Leader on the Student
Council...how could you do such a thing?"
With one fell swoop, I was dismissed from the
Student Council AND the cheerleading squad!!! Does
anyone remember what happened next??? |

Mary tells us . . . . .
I remember two girls who
had so much fun working on the candy counter in Senior
year at least...Joan Baldwin....that is where she first
told me she like Patrick Smith...and me Mary Harrington. I
remember being upset when someone wanted just red
jellybeans...they were my favorite...but I sold them to
them anyway and the next day when I was heading to work on
the candy counter I saw Sr. Andre ( later Sr. Helen
Miller) her head bent low doing some very serious work and
when I approached her she handed my a whole bag of red
jelly beans. I remember working with Toe ( Terri Perry) on
the Strawberry Festival....yelling HELP....because there
were so many strawberries to prepare....what a dear good
Friend Terri was then and still is. I remember Frank
DeFeo's final words in our Senior Play...and seeing all
the Nuns run towards the stage....I remember Bill TenBrink
RIP laughing so hard when Sr. Leo said "Thank God for
the man she missed"....they had to carry him out of
class chair and all. I remember those cool gym outfits...
How about when they let all the animals go before the
penny auction....Great Class night....Great Classmates...I
could go and on...better leave room for others
What were the names of
the ladies who worked in the kitchen?

And Clem Thoennes remembers . . .. .
Walking from church to the school on
First Friday after mass. Remember the filled
donuts and hot chocolate in the cafeteria when we got to
school?
|
Hey
Clem...I don't remember the cafeteria with those
doughnuts, but I remember stopping in the Lighthouse
luncheonette after First Friday Mass...and we were
always allowed to be a little late for class...but maybe
that was in grammar school...anybody else remember?

And Terri
O'Donnell Asks . . .
Do you remember when we were in 5th or 6th grade and we were
roller-skating on Sewell Avenue. We formed a line and were pulling each other . The line was so long. Members in the line were Joan Olsen, I believe you were there, Gail Vance, Clair McKillop, Maggie Robertson, Jack Anton, I believe Billy Cannon was in the line. We zigzagged up and down
Sewell Avenue on a cold and windy day. It was near dinner time, the sun was going down. We were bundled up in winter coats and gloves. We had our usual runny noses and red cheeks. It was a great time. Do you remember it?

| Sister Cletus-- I took shorthand
and typing from her and the thought of those
classes still scares me. She said to me one day
--after I had tried to transcribe someone else's
shorthand notes-- "-Well, Miss Pinion, I
certainly hope you don't intend to become a
secretary!". I told her I wanted to be a
teacher---but she gave me good advice. I always
had someone else type my papers in college and
only now, after retiring, have I had time to
actually sit and type at the computer. I had to
drop her typing class because I was getting a D
with 67 words a minute and 2 mistakes-----no
erasers allowed!!!! Egg Harbor was too far away
for me to stay after school to type a PERFECT
paper |

Senior Prom Cinderella Story
Lois got her
gorgeous big brother Georgie to take me to the
prom.....it was truly a Cinderella story.
I had no date and had gone all day to help decorate the
auditorium---walked home crying ......when I got home my
mother said Mrs. W called and said Georgie 'wanted' to
take me to the prom. I had about 3 hrs to get
ready...borrowed a gown and had to buy some
tulle.....couldn't wear strapless in those days. I know
Lois and Carole got Georgie to do it. Lois was my best
friend and I knew Georgie as her older brother. What a
sweetheart! He came to my house in their Studebaker and
had a fur jacket for me and told me the gloves were in
the pocket.
No one knew I was coming and I had the best date at the
prom ....a Villanova guy. One of my favorite nuns Sr
Gabriel tried to get some guys to take me, but hey I had
my pride and I didn't want to go with the ones she
called. But GEORGE W was definitely Prince Charming. I
wasn't even nervous with him because he was Lois'
brother....I had never had a date before and wasn't sure
how to act. At this time I was still taller than most of
the guys in my class.
But I'm a knockout now closing in on my 68th birthday in
a week or so. Now if I can just lose all these extra lbs
so I can 'wow' 'em at the 50th reunion.
